The Importance of Leadership

Humans are incredibly adaptable; people can live indefinitely in regions of the globe where temperatures range is 40 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit. That temperature range can be extended with climate-adjusting devices like heaters and air conditioning or climate-designed clothing. Climate conditions impact the quality of life that many people around the world experience based on access to recreation, fresh food, and social interaction.

Humans can also live within a variety of governmental systems. Over the centuries many humans have endured political systems based on communism, socialism, monarchy, autocracy, oligarchy, and democracy. In my opinion, there are optimal political systems that help humans thrive and other systems that help the ruling class thrive. There are combinations of these systems that may improve or decrease human potential. As humans, we have tested all these systems and continue to seek the most effective governmental system. To this point, I would state that democracies have produced the largest increase in human wealth and happiness seen to this point in history. Hopefully, this trend will continue.

Humans are also adept at thriving under many types of leadership. Like political systems, there are many different leadership styles. Autocratic, bureaucratic, scientific, visionary, servant, Machiavellian, situational, and coaching to name just a few. Some of these leadership styles are detrimental to the development of people within the organization. Just like political systems, there are certain types of leadership styles that are better than others. How do you pick a leadership style that is the most effective for your team and organization? That is a challenging question and one that requires an in-depth understanding of your own personal skills and abilities; along with an understanding of the organization’s culture and goals.

The good news is that leadership, like many other skills, can be learned and adapted to produce great results within organizations. All you need is an open mind to learning more about leadership and you can help make things happen for your team and your organization!
